Spotlight: Sitting Down With Savas J. Karas of CAPREIT

Savas J. Karas, Chief Technology & Transformation Officer for CAPREIT

Savas J. Karas is the Chief Technology & Transformation Officer for Maryland-based multifamily investment and management firm CAPREIT. Karas has more than three decades of management and information technology leadership experience across multiple industries. Prior to joining CAPREIT, he was President of Enterprise Solutions Group. He recently spoke with units Magazine about the changes in technology and the stigma around the adoption of this proptech in the rental housing industry.

We’re in an era of considerable technological change in rental housing. What can apartment owners and operators do to make employees more comfortable with and more accepting of new technologies and processes?

Change is both a mindset and a process. Talking about change and training your staff on how to adapt to and react to change is part of the successful adoption of new technologies. While it can be tempting to add every shiny new technology, a measured approach typically works best. One key concept to consider is the potential impact it will have on your team. You should refrain from inundating your team with anything that is potentially disruptive.

Developing a detailed change management plan that accounts for different learning processes, adoption times, new hires and reinforced learning is a key part to a successful adoption.
